Hi,
I'm new to the forum.
I wanted to let people know that the railway bridge over by the Sunbeam ( I believe that's the pub) has been closed and padlocked. It's going to be torn down. I have serious objections to this - the new bridge takes longer to cross - this can be problematic for both the elderly, disabled as well as people with prams, it's impossible to see if anyone if anyone is on the new bridge - this can be particularly dangerous for anyone arriving on the later trains -particularly women, but anyone that uses the new bridge could be affected - what has been created is an opportunistic spot for muggings, rape and assault.
There is also the question as this bridge is quite old there is the possibility that it should be protected - does anyone know the history of it? How long has it been there? Is it possible it is listed or should be? As the Earlestown station is suppose to be one of the oldest (along with Newton) in this area - is possible the bridge is just as old - do we really want another part of the history destroyed?
And then there is the aesthetics of it...green, purple and yellow - these are the colours of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I've only lived here in Newton for 7 years but never have I ever seen parade floats on either the High St or on Market St. Is there a part of Newton history that I don't know about and isn't listed on wikipedia?
People here in Newton/Earlestown saved the town hall...can't we save this bridge as well?
I believe the destruction of it is immenent
